Haywood Co. Jail Hiring

Haywood County Jail and Justice staff are almost ready to move into their new facility, but they won’t be getting many new coworkers in the process. In a Tuesday meeting, the county budget and jail committee agreed to add only three full-time jobs for the complex. Two of those jobs are custodian positions. However, this comes after recommendations from a hired consultant planning company advised they hire about ten workers to help manage the new 80,000 square foot facility. Mayor Franklin Smith wouldn’t specify why he believes they don’t need the additional recommended jobs, but County Commissioner Robert Greens says the county’s tight budget cannot be ignored in these situations. “I just hope that we can work it to a point while we wont have to hit taxes too hard or hit taxes at all,” said Green. Mayor Smith tells us the construction of the new complex has come out around $1 million under budget. That extra money was voted to go towards improvements to Haywood County High School.
