Sen. Finney Discusses Tenure Bill

Senator Lowe Finney took some time in McKenzie today to talk about a new tenure law on its way that will affect teachers and those who want to become teachers all across the state. While the Senate approved the bill in a 21 to 12 vote, Thursday, Finney says he is not a fan of the measure and that is why he did not vote for it. The new law would require teachers to wait five years before they earn tenure, instead of three. It would also allow tenure to be revoked for teachers who perform poorly. Finney says his “nay” vote was not necessarily based on the bill’s contents, but rather on the way it was designed. “This year unfortunately teachers were not made a part of this process and any number of pieces of legislation dealing with teachers, we should be bringing them on board and getting them to help us with this process. Unfortunately that was not the case,” said Finney. Governor Bill Haslam still has to give the final approval before the measure can go into effect.
