New computers were being installed at Pleasant Grove Church in Grand Junction, Friday because of a grant that was secured by State Representative Johnny Shaw. The computers are being installed in strategic locations for children to use after school. Shaw has been working with Hardeman County Mayor Willie Spencer to find locations for the laboratories. “This is a community based program… We started this about three years ago in our church,” says Represenative Shaw. Shaw thought the program was so successful that he wanted implemented through out Hardeman County. He says the grant was in the amount of $250,000. He says this is enough to provide computers to all nine municipalities. “We furnish the location….we house them …we furnish all of the snacks… (and) of course the supervision for the kids for a total of about three and a half to four hours, two days a week,” says Representative Shaw. Grand Junction received 35 to 40 computers for their laboratory. Shaw says the amount of computers each city receives depends on the size of the community. “We also have other programs we’re going to implement later down the road… we’re going to teach them (kids) life skills,” says Pastor Emanuel Donis of Pleasant Grove Church. Pastor Donis says the center at his church will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays form 3:30 till 6:00 p.m. Pastor Donis adds he hopes the program will help empower their children so they can be successful in the future. “I think that is a positive tool as a parent because we live in a high tech society,” says Wanda Robinson, a parent living in Bolivar. Robinson is excited about the program and thinks parents stand to learn from their children who pick up valuable computer skills. Representaive Shaw says in his church in Haywood County, they found many parents stayed with their children at the after school laboratories. He says he hopes seniors will take advantage of the computer labs, as well.
