Teacher Arrested in Hopper Barker Road Crash
Jackson police have arrested a man responsible for a wreck along Hopper Barker in north Jackson that rerouted traffic and knocked out power. Officers said John Martin, 37, now faces charges of driving under the influence, in connection with a Friday afternoon crash. Jackson-Madison County school leaders tell ABC 7 Eyewitness News he is a social studies teacher at Jackson Central-Merry High School. According to witnesses, the crash happened a little after 5, involving a car and a SUV. They said Martin, who was the driver of the car, was traveling west, when he apparently lost control and crashed into a utility pole, bringing down power lines. Witnesses said the driver of the SUV swerved to miss the car, plowing through the yard of a nearby home. Luckily, no one was injured. Utility crews worked into the evening repairing the downed utility pole and power lines. “I heard a loud bang and I know he had either hit another vehicle or possibly hit the phone pole, cause we’ve had these kinds of accidents here before on this curve,” said Rochelle Inman, a witness to the wreck. “It’s a real dangerous curve, so it’s happened several times before, but this one is pretty bad.” Jackson police continue to investigate this incident.
