Fifth grade students all across the state are getting ready to take the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Achievement Test, better known as the T-CAP. One school has a rather novel way of getting students fired up about the testing. Friday, students at South Elementary School invited Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist to join them for a game of “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader.” The city leader held his own against the students. Tennessee students take the T-CAP test each spring. Teachers along with administrators often try different approaches to get them ready to do their best. “We just want to show the kids that we believe in them and that they are going to do well on this test,” said Laura Walker, 5th Grade Teacher at South Elementary. “This is just our way of showing them we have faith in them.” The achievement test is a timed, multiple choice assessment that measures skills in reading, language, math, science and social studies. It is used as a measurement for student learning.
