Crockett County Mother Speaks
For the first time today we heard from the mother of the Crockett County High School student allegedly run over by a Dyersburg High School student after a baseball game Thursday. Riley Ward remains in critical condition at the Med in Memphis, but his mother, Kim Ward, said he made a small amount of progress today. She says his oxygen levels increased and the pressure in his head decreased. Ward has been heavily sedated since the accident occurred. Riley says the doctors have tried to reduce the sedation, but for the past few days have run into complications when doing so. “It was the worst thing I’ve experienced in my life and you feel like you can’t do anything. I feel that way everyday I have to go up and look at him in that state. You can’t do anything to make the situation progress, you just sit back and hope for the best,” said Riley. Riley says she talked to her son’s friend that were with him when the incident happened. They said it happened so quickly, they’re not sure. “From what I understand, you know, my son was not involved in any altercation with anybody, he wasn’t shouting at anybody, you know, I assume this young man knew the seven boys were from Crockett County, I don’t know what was going through his mind,” says Riley. Riley said her son has a big heart and is very outgoing. She said she knew her son had many friends, but she didn’t fully realize how many friends loved him until this tragedy. “How does this young man lay down at night and actually sleep knowing that my sons’ life is hanging in the balance. What is going through his mind, is there any remorse and regret,?” wondered Riley. Riley said she contacted the Criminal Investigation Unit in Dyersburg to find out whether any progress had been made on the case, but was told the matter was still under investigation.
