Judge Gun Bill Advances In TN House

A proposal that would allow Tennessee judges with certain training to carry a gun in the courtroom is headed for a full House vote.

The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Jeremy Faison of Cosby was approved by the House Judiciary Committee on a voice vote on Tuesday and will now be scheduled for a vote on the House floor. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the same committee in the Senate.

Currently, any law enforcement officer can carry a firearm at all times and anywhere in the state. The proposal allows judges to carry during their judicial duties.

An amendment to prevent judges from undergoing eight hours of firearms training failed. Chairman Eric Watson, a Cleveland Republican and captain deputy sheriff, said if the training is required for officers then it should also apply to judges.
