Ameristeel Teaches Kids About Earth Day
Students at one Gibson County school get a take home lesson to mark Earth Day. 3rd grade students at Medina Elementary School all received 18-inch tree saplings to plant at home. The trees were courtesy of Gerdau Ameristeel mill of Jackson. The company’s Earth Day program, now in its fourth year, aims to increase student awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and teach them about the company’s recycling efforts. “In the last 10 years, I think we have come a long way. And we have a long way to go,” said Mary Zajic of Ameristeel. “By the time children get to be our age, the world will be totally different.” The students also viewed a video about the mill which is the largest recycler in the state, recycling nearly 1.2 billion pounds of scrap metal in 2010. They also received environmentally-friendly bags to help reduce the use of plastics.
