UK Hires New President
University of Kentucky trustees have hired longtime Alabama college administrator Eli Capilouto as the next president of Kentucky’s flagship university.
The unanimous selection Tuesday of the 61-year-old Alabama native came two days after Capilouto was introduced as the preferred candidate and a week since he got his first look at the Lexington campus during an impromptu visit.
Capilouto has been provost at the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 2005. He rose through the ranks as a professor and dean before serving as the school’s chief academic officer.
He will succeed Lee T. Todd Jr., who is retiring in June after a decade as UK’s president.
UK has about 28,000 students and a nearly $2.5 billion budget.
Capilouto inherits the task of leading UK’s pursuit of top 20 status as a public research university.
