A Carroll County School celebrated a huge achievement in the way they incorporate healthy lifestyles on Wednesday. McKenzie Elementary is the only school in West Tennessee to receive the U.S. Healthier School Challenge award this year. Today Carroll County Coordinated school Health put on a Food Fiesta and field day for the students to recognize their hard work. In order to be eligible for the award, school officials had to incorporate lots of fruits, vegetables and whole wheat into their school lunch menu. Food Services Supervisor Rita Brandon says getting to adapt to eating healthier food was quite a challenge in the beginning. “We offered it with ranch dressing which maybe would encourage them to eat it. And on the brown rice we tried to maybe incorporate a little cheese on top. Something to make it a little bit interesting to them,” said Brandon. In order to keep those healthy habits up this summer, McKenzie Elementary is offering free breakfasts and lunches to kids under 18 in the community starting May 24 until July 15.
