Nuclear Protestors Convicted
Twelve anti-nuclear protesters have been convicted of trespassing during a protest at Oak Ridge’s Y-12 National Security Complex last year.
The protesters entered the property after a protest held adjacent to the facility on July 5.
They face a maximum possible punishment of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Sentencing dates have not yet been scheduled.
The group was found guilty on Wednesday after a three-day trial in Knoxville.
Prosecutor Bill Killian said he hoped the verdict would send a message that those who attempt to compromise the security of the complex will be vigorously prosecuted.
