TN Newspaper Figure Dies
Former Tennessean publisher Amon Carter Evans has died, his friend and colleague John Seigenthaler told the newspaper. He was 77.
The Evans’ family bought The Tennessean in 1937. Evan’s father and then brother served as publishers before him.
Evans was named CEO of the newspaper in the early 1960s, naming John Seigenthaler editor in 1962.
Evans sold The Tennessean to Gannett for about $50 million in 1979.
Seigenthaler said Evans was a publisher who wanted the paper to reach out to the community it served.
Sen. Lamar Alexander issued a statement calling Evans a “Tennessee original” and a friend who will be missed.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
