MS City Braces For River Crest
Residents along the Mississippi River will be watching for the expected crest at Greenville on Monday, where officials are insisting they expect the extensive levee system to do its job.
The river was projected to crest at 65 feet in Greenville. Downriver, the projected crests are 57.5 feet in Vicksburg on Thursday and 63.5 feet in Natchez on Saturday.
In Greenville, Peter Nimrod, chief engineer of the Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners, says anticipation is high among local residents as are hopes that the historic event passes without too much damage.
About 180 National Guardsmen are assisting county and state agencies in Warren, Yazoo, Humphreys, Issaquena, and Sharkey counties.
Emergency officials say the river is slowly falling at Helena, Ark., and Tunica, and mainline levees are holding.
