Riverboats Could Return To Bluff City
Overnight riverboat passenger service may be coming back to Memphis and bringing hundreds of jobs along with it.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that the Great American Steamboat Co., which owns the American Queen and the Mississippi Queen vessels, is considering relocating its corporate headquarters to the Bluff City.
The Mississippi River steamboat company will be presenting a proposal Tuesday to the Memphis City Council about the possible move. If the company selects Memphis, it could bring an estimated 250 to 500 new jobs to the river city.
Great American Steamboat was previously headquartered in New Orleans before going into bankruptcy and getting new owners.
It’s not clear if the company has been offered tax incentives to move to Memphis. The company is also considering a site in Mississippi.
