Flood Victims Should Apply for Aid
Even if you do have insurance, federal officials encourage you to still apply for aid. FEMA leaders said those with insurance should find out what their policy covers and make sure to keep papers and receipts from any repair work that has been done. They said by filing a claim, if your insurance settlement is delayed or is not enough to cover repairs or temporary housing costs, you could be eligible for federal assistance. “Some people will assume that they don’t qualify, maybe they have some insurance. But if the insurance didn’t cover it all, it’s a possibility they may be qualified for one of our grants,” said W. Montague Winfield, FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer. “So regardless of their situation, we encourage everybody to at least give us a call and register and we will make the determination on the eligibility.” FEMA officials add, even if you filed a claim for damages from last year’s storms and floods, you can still file a claim for damages suffered in this year’s storms.
