It was a stormy night for many in West Tennessee, Wednesday. Some of the hardest hit areas were in Hardin County. “We had about 4,000 customers (without power) in the TVC area, which is in Hardin County. Then this south part is served by Pickwick Electric and had about 3,000 customers out also,” said Melvin Martin, Director of the Hardin County Emergency Management Agency. Martin said the areas of south of Savannah, as well as the Counce and Walnut Grove areas, suffered the most damage. “[I] walked through to the back door and the lights were off in the house, which was unusual. I opened the back door and couldn’t quite open it because there was a tree limb that came through sort of blocking the door,” said Bob Riggan, a homeowner in Savannah. Riggan said he was visiting his father at a nursing home, watching the weather coverage when the storm hit. He said he came home to what he calls a “surprise.” Some business owners suffered damage, as well. “Well my cook was here first and told me we had a tree in the kitchen,” said Counce restaurant owner, Jarrett Bishop. Bishop said he came to open his restaurant, his second day in business, and found his neighbor’s tree over the back of his kitchen, a tree limb through the roof of the walk-in freezer and a collapsed ceiling in his kitchen. Residents of Hardin County said in light of the destruction suffered by those in Joplin, Missouri, they count themselves blessed. “It’s only surface damage. We can repair it, not like a lot of guys that town’s blown away, completely, whole town devastated,” said Riggan.
