Henderson County Man Pulls Person From Burning Building

Henderson County Fire officials are calling resident Stony Bray a hero after he rescued a man and his mother from a burning home. Nick Hart lives across the street from his mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s He received a phone call from her early in the morning last Wednesday saying she “needed help.” Just as he was about to run in the burning house to rescue her, Bray was passing by and pulled up to help. “I said is anybody in the house, he said ‘Yes, my mother’s in there,’ I said ‘Well, let’s go in and get her.'” said Bray. Bray stayed close to the front door while Hart went to his mother’s bedroom and grabbed her. However, he says he became disoriented from the smoke and slowly began to pass out. “My grandkids, my daughter, my wife popped in my mind and I thought, ‘I’ve got to go on for them, but I can’t.'” recalled Hart. At that moment, Bray says he went further inside to find the two and grabbed Hart by the wrist and pulled him and his mother out. “That was one of the best feelings I ever felt was that hand.” said Hart. Even after saving Hart and his mother’s lives, Bray says he was doesn’t view himself as a hero. “I might of risked my life. I didn’t think of it like that. I just knew that that’s what I was supposed to do at that time.” said Bray. Both Hart and his mother suffered from smoke inhalation but are recovering. His mother is now living safely with family members, and does not recall the fire.
