Community Sunday
On a day when most Americans prepare to remember those that have served their country, one West Tennessee church said they are finding ways to serve their community, everyday. “We’ve been building up to this for months. We have a theme, ‘Love, Live, Serve,'” said Pastor David Beecham of First Pentecostal Church in Lexington. Beecham said the theme entails loving God, loving people, living ones faith instead of just stating ones faith, and serving God by serving ones community. “We’re painting, we’re mowing, we’re visiting shut-ins, visiting nursing homes, visiting older members and taking care of things at their house,” said Pastor Beecham. Pastor Beecham said the mayor was particularly appreciative of the church’s gesture. He says the city simply does not have the funds for the upkeep on many of the its old, abandoned homes. “I think it’s fine, really I do…. I appreciate everything they’re doing,” said Williard Ray Richardson, a 101-year-old member of the church. The congregation agreed to paint Richardson’s home and do other needed maintenance. “Those people are just wonderful to come and clean it (abandoned home) up and mow the yard and take care of it. Brother Beecham’s a great guy….. it make the houses next door to it look much better,” said Toby Little, a resident of Lexington.
