A long-running tradition brought out several Medina residents to celebrate the Lions Club’s Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday morning. U.S. Representative Stephen Fincher was among the guest speakers as this was his first time to attend the ceremony, now in its 21st year. “Being in Washington, walking the halls of Congress, seeing the history up there really makes you appreciate what our veterans have given and how important it is,” said Fincher. Local Boy Scouts participated in lowering the colors to half staff in memory of all the fallen soldiers. Veterans and supporters in attendance said this event help them remember the true meaning of the holiday. “There’s nothing wrong with picnics and there’s nothing wrong with going out and having fun. God wants you to do this. But don’t let us forget the real meaning of the true heroes,” said veteran William C. Harrell of Medina. The monuments placed in front of city hall were erected in 1991 and commemorate Medina soldiers who gave the supreme sacrifice dating all the way back to the Civil War.
