Memphis Group Seeks Cash For Cannons

The Shelby County Historical Commission is seeking donations to buy four reproduction Civil War cannons for its Confederate Park.

The park once had original Civil War cannons, but those were sacrificed as part of a World War II scrap-metal drive.

It later displayed World War II cannons. Those were removed in 2009. They will be renovated and placed in Overton Park’s Veterans Plaza.

Historical Commission Chairman Lee Millar told The Commercial Appeal the reproduction cannons will cost $70,000. The West Tennessee Historical Society and the N. B. Forrest Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans already have pledged $5,000 each. The commission is seeking donations for the remaining $60,000.

Millar said he hopes to install the cannons this year as part of sesquicentennial observances of the Civil War.
