Body Found Believed To Be “Mayor” Of Beale Street

Memphis police believe a badly decomposed body found Tuesday is that of a missing trumpeter known as “the mayor of Beale Street.”

Seventy-year-old Rudy Williams was last seen on May 22 when he left his home to walk to a local convenience store for a pack of cigarettes.

The body was found at about 8 p.m. Tuesday in a wooded area less than a mile from Williams’ home after someone at a nearby motel reported an odor coming from the woods.

Police told The Commercial Appeal the condition of the body made it difficult to determine whether foul play was involved.

Family members declined to comment late Tuesday, awaiting a positive identification.

Williams has played trumpet on Beale Street for more than 50 years.
