A young Fayette County mother is lucky to be alive after what witnesses are calling a violent domestic attack at a Haywood County convenience store. “In a small town like this I would never think that would happen,” said Jared Barrow, a Stanton resident. According to the store manager, a young mother in her early 20s, her 2-year-old child and her boyfriend were purchasing items inside the store when her ex-boyfriend, fresh off a fight with his girlfriend in Brownsville saw her car while passing through. A close friend of the victim, who wants to remain anonymous, said she saw the suspect slash the victim’s tires before heading inside the store where he immediately began hitting her, causing the woman to drop her child. Witnesses said the suspect then walked out to his car, grabbed a gun and came back in shooting. They said the victim was shot once in the arm and thigh. “That is scary for a small town like this,” said Stanton restaurant owner, Clarence Beasley. He owns a business directly across the street from the scene of the crime. “She could have come in here and been eating and maybe it would have been over here,” Beasley said. According to witnesses, the victim and the suspect are both from Fayette County. Haywood County Sheriff Melvin Bond said the victim was taken to a Jackson hospital where she underwent surgery, Monday night. As of Tuesday morning, she was reported in stable condition. We are told her 2-year-old child is fine. Bond said the suspect surrendered to Fayette County officials Tuesday afternoon. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, he was still being booked into the Haywood County jail.
