MS Escapee Shot Dead After Pursuit

Choctaw County Coroner Keith Coleman tells The Clarion-Ledger that a fugitive is dead following a pursuit that began after police said the inmate overpowered an Ackerman police officer and stole her cruiser at gunpoint.

Ackerman Police Chief Tanya Burton said inmate Bobby Fair allegedly attacked a police officer around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday as he was on his way into the courtroom.

Police say the chase ended on the Natchez Trace Parkway, north of French Camp, sometime around 8 p.m.

Coleman released no details about the circumstances of Fair’s death.

The coroner says the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.

Officials say the 27-year-old Fair was in custody for two counts of armed robbery.
