Police Cruiser Hit by Speeding Car

An incident on the Hwy 45 Bypass just past Vann Drive, in North Jackson, sent two people and a Jackson police officer to the hospital. Jackson police said around 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, an officer pulled over to assist a stalled vehicle. “The officer had made contact with a family member to come and assist her,” said Lt. J.D. Hale of Jackson Police Department. While waiting for the woman’s husband, Jackson police said a speeding car struck the patrol car from behind, throwing the police cruiser into the stalled vehicle and ejecting the woman from her car. “We have determined that speed was a factor in this incident,” said Lt. J.D. Hale. Lt. Hale said Tennessee has a ‘Move Over’ law that protect citizens, as well as, officers. He said the law requires motorist move to the left lane when they see an emergency vehicle in the shoulder with a motorist. He said not adhering to the law has penalties. “It’s a misdemeanor offense, it carries a fine with it,” said Lt. Hale. He said the fines are determined by a judge. Lt. Hale said both the officer and the driver he was helping were treated and released last night. He said the driver who hit the cruiser had surgery this morning for non-life threatening injuries. No word yet on her condition.
