Officials Making Renovation Plans for Allenton Heights
Three months after funds were approved for renovations to Allenton Heights in east Jackson, city and housing officials are now looking to put those dollars to good use. Leaders said they have received $167,000 from HUD that will go towards repairing several problems in the complex, such as electrical issues, broken sidewalks and mold problems. The complex is one of the oldest public housing complexes in the city with many residents living below the poverty line. “That’s what the plan will determine. Will we rehab those units?, Will we demolish these units?, Can we salvage them, or can we do a combination of both?, and look at the infrastructure within the development,” said Winston Henning , executive director of the Jackson Housing Authority. Henning said it will take the city’s planning committee at least 12 to 18 months to begin making renovations which will also include parts of downtown Jackson and Lane Avenue.
