Kids going to many summer camps will continue to receive nutritious meals made possible by local, state and the federal government. Community leaders joined campers at Westwood Gardens Parks and Recreation site to talk about the program. Free meals that meet federal guidelines are provided to all children at approved sites from now through August. Right now, there are approximately 250 sites serving 7,000 breakfast and lunch meals. “We all know the importance of starting a child’s day off right with a nutritious breakfast and continuing it throughout the day with the lunches. So, we’re making sure that routine continues for them through the summer,” said Patti Pickler of the Southwest Human Resources Agency. “If there are any sites or any areas where children need meals, we are still available to them this summer as well as following summers.” The program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service and is administered by the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Sites can see if they qualify for the program by contacting the Southwest Human Resources Agency at (731) 989-5111.
