MS School Hopes To Open By Fall

Monroe County officials are working to get Smithville students into their own classrooms in the fall.

Many of Smithville’s school buildings were destroyed in the April 27 tornado, including the town’s only high school.

County schools superintendent Scott Cantrell tells WCBI-TV that students in grades K-6 finished the school year in Hatley while grades 7-12 finished in Becker.

Cantrell says the temporary campus will consist of modular buildings set up in a field located behind the local Piggly Wiggly. He says bids will go out Friday for a football field.

Cantrell says basketball games will be held at another school or possibly in donated space by area churches.

He says the temporary campus is expected to be completed by the end of July and classes will begin August 4th.
