Deputies Look for Suspects in Chimney Scam
Carroll County investigators believe a group of men posing as chimney cleaners may be on the loose in the area, possibly targeting the elderly. One 88-year-old Lavinia woman says the men came to her home and actually went on her roof pretending to work on her chimney. Afterward, they demanded she pay them $5,000. She says the price was a red flag that something was not right, so she wrote a check for a little more than $2,000. Officials say one of the men, Jack Harrison, 66, was later caught on camera cashing the check at a bank in Lexington. Deputies say he is also wanted in Oklahoma for similar frauds. The victim says she will feel much safer once these men are caught. ” I guess if I’d of crossed him somewhere I don’t know whether he would’ve done anything or not. I sat down on the couch while he’s straddling my knees and that scared me. That’s when I lost it there and I didn’t know quite what I was writing,” said victim Eva Bernice Phillips. Phillips tells us the men were in a newer model red pick-up truck with equipment loaded on it. If you have any information on these men or believe you were scammed by the same men, contact the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department at (731) 986-8947.
