MS Police Officers Going To Driving School

After a recent rash of wrecks, the Columbus Police Department is starting up an in-house driving school.

Police Chief Joseph St. John tells The Commercial Dispatch that Patrolman Gregory M. Harstad is a driving instructor and will teach all his fellow on a rotating schedule starting in July.

Between the driving classes and the suspensions of four officers, St. John says he hopes officers will be more careful with city property.

Four squad cars have been totaled this year, two by the same officer, Rebecca Lomax.

St. John says the city has just started taking discipline for wrecks more seriously in the last three years or so.

The department recently bought five refurbished squad cars from the Missouri Highway Patrol to replace the wrecked vehicles.
