Madison County Commission Meets

Members of the West Madison County Concerned Citizens group were among the first to take their seats for the Madison County Commission Meeting Monday morning. The group organized to protest what they say is an illegal landfill on Betty Manley road. The property was slated to be rezoned, but commissioners decided to ‘table’ the issue until a further meeting. Cora Springfield, a neighbor of the property, says she wants leaders to take action now. “He (the owner) is in violation. A violation means you are breaking the law,” Springfield says. “How many laws are you going to continue to break before something is done about it?” Springfield adds she is concerned about the environmental impact of the operation. Commissioners say the landfill issue is currently involved in a lawsuit, and any decision must wait until the legal action is settled. In addition to the landfill issue, commissioners also voted on the first reading of the 2011- 2012 county budget. It passed, with some discussion about grant monies and spending for non-profit organizations. No budget items were removed. Commissioners also appointed Bill Ragon to fill the District 2 seat previously held by Charles Byrd Sr.
