Suspended Policeman Faces More Charges

The Jackson police officer indicted after he allegedly stole money from a citizen while responding to a robbery and shooting call was arrested over the weekend. Police say Marvent Brooks, 35, of Medon, was found slumped over his passenger seat behind a closed business around 3 a.m., Saturday. Officers say they smelled alcohol and possibly marijuana on him. Court papers showed he had an open beer bottle and a gun laying in the front seat. “He (officer) placed Mr. Brooks in custody, being in possession of a firearm while under the influence and violation of the open container law,” said Captain Mike Holt of the Jackson Police Department. Holt said these charges are in addition to Brook’s current indictment. “Mr. Brooks was indicted last year by the grand jury on theft charges and official misconduct charges,” said Capt. Holt. The grand jury indictment stems from a robbery and shooting call Brooks responded to last August. He and a fellow officer, David Dreblow, stand charged with stealing cash from the victim while on the scene. In addition to the theft and official misconduct charges, Brooks was indicted on charges of tampering with evidence and witness coercion. “He is on unpaid administrative leave pending the disposition of those charges. The new charges will not affect that,” said Capt. Holt. Brooks posted a $2,500 bond on the charges from the weekend. His bond on the previous charges was $5,000. His $5,000 bond could be in jeopardy if the district attorney determines he violated the provision of his original bond agreement.
