Brownsville Begins Major Construction

There’s a new plan taking shape in downtown Brownsville. A plan to change the sidewalks, landscaping and overall functionality of the downtown area, leaders say. “It’s a major face-lift,” Brownsville Mayor Jo Matherne says. “It’s going to be a vast improvement not only in the appearance, but the usability of our court square area.” For now, one lane of the roadways is blocked all around the court square. Heavy equipment and construction barricades have been placed along the roadway. Mayor Matherne is encouraging drivers to be patient and prepare for delays. “We’ve had a particular challenge with the large trucks,” she says. Detours have been assigned on the bypass, to help direct truck drivers around the downtown area. Construction on this first phase is expected to be completed by the fall.
