MS City To Monitor Bars With Cameras

The Oxford Board of Aldermen has agreed to buy video surveillance cameras.

Police Chief Mike Martin says the 10 cameras would be placed around the downtown area.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Martin told aldermen on Tuesday that the cameras that would provide real-time surveillance of the Square, with special focus on areas near bars where trouble is usually concentrated.

The system, from ADGIX in Madison, will cost about $37,000 and can be expanded as needed.

Martin says It will create permanent video recordings that can be used both to implement crowd-control techniques and to prosecute criminals.
