It has been eight months since David Lee Capers, 28, of Ripley, was murdered. Police arrested Capers’ cousin, Shaun O’neal Taliaferro in the shooting on September 9, 2010. Capers was hit seven times. His family is still in shock. “I’m still hurting. I can’t sleep. I’m thinking about him all the time,” said Capers’ mother, Brenda Lee. Taliaferro was indicted in Lauderdale County, although his family said the murder actually happened in Haywood County. “Ripley took over, but David didn’t get killed in Ripley. He got killed in Haywood County,” said Lee. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation believes Capers may have been riding in a vehicle with Taliaferro where he crossed the Lauderdale County line into Haywood County. That is where family members said Capers was fatally shot, yet Lauderdale County is where Taliaferro was indicted. “We haven’t heard anything from the court or the DA. No one tried to explain things or where they going with it,” said Capers Mother-in-law, Dawanda Pickett. Just before Taliaferro went to trial in Lauderdale County, the district attorney general asked that the case be moved to Haywood County, where a different district attorney general must start from scratch. “I’m trying to hold on and it seems like its taking forever for this trial to go on. I just want some peace in my life,” said Allen. Taliaferro is now being held without bond at the Haywood County Jail on charges of premeditated murder and a weapons charge. He will be arraigned there July 21.
