Overall Crime in Jackson Down
New statistics from the Jackson Police Department are showing a significant drop in the overall crime rate compared to the same time period, last year. However, some of the most violent crimes are not showing the same trend. For example, the statistics show rape and attempted murder cases more than doubled compared to the first six months of 2010. Also, by as of Jun 30, 2010, there had been no murders. This year Jackson has already had two. Fortunately, the big impact on the overall crime number is the significant drop in vehicle burglaries, vehicle theft and shoplifting. This leaves the total crime rate number down from 5,110 last year to 4,733 crimes this year. “Murder is a hard crime to actually prevent. We can put people out in the districts, put a whole lot more patrol cars and that will prevent crimes like residential burglaries, commercial burglaries, auto burglaries, stuff like that because those are happening out in the open,” said Deputy Chief Barry Michael. Deputy Chief Michael also says he gives credit to community members for being involved with reporting crimes in their areas.
