Humboldt police are investigating a suspicious death after an elderly woman was found dead in a backyard on West Elliot Street a little after 3 p.m. Friday. However, Humboldt residents said Elliot Street has once again been hit with crime. “A helpless old lady, why would you do something like that,” asked one woman. This time, family members said the victim is Fannie Campbell, 81, of Humboldt, a loved woman in her community. “It is just too much, somebody helpless, on a cane, come on now,” said family member Andrea Kane. For her, Campbell’s death is unbearable. “She helped raise me and she helped raise my mom,” said Kane. According to Kane, Campbell called her earlier in the afternoon to tell her to come pick up some fresh fruit. “When we came to get the watermelon the house was open, she was already dead,” Kane said. However, what she found in the backyard is a scene that keeps replaying over and over in her mind. “We found her in a hole, with her leg sticking out and a shovel beside her,” said Kane. Kane said it could have only been a couple hours from the time they talked on the phone to the time she found Campbell buried in the backyard. Now, area residents and family members are demanding justice. “What was it that you needed, that you felt like you had to go to these extremes to try and get it. What was it that she did to you that you had to take her life,” asked Teressa Fussell, Campbell’s niece. “I want to know what happened, and whoever did it I want them punished,” said Kane. The TBI is also assisting in this death investigation. Humboldt police are asking anyone who saw something suspicious near Elliot Street on Friday afternoon to come forward. The victim’s body has been taken to Memphis for an autopsy.
