Obion County Set to Hike Wheel Tax
Obion County drivers could soon have to dig a little deeper into their pockets after a wheel tax hike is on its way to becoming law. Monday morning, commissioners approved a $10 increase of the wheel tax on first reading. That would raise the fee from $40 to $50 per renewal. The issue must be approved in a second vote in August before it becomes official. County leaders said they continue to struggle with revenue issues to properly fund government operations and services. “Well, we did make cuts, we made massive cuts this year, people were cut in every department, so we made our cuts,” said Danny Jowers, an Obion County commissioner. “Now we’re just asking to fund what we need to fund the government.” Jowers told ABC 7 Eyewitness News a property tax increase is also a possibility when the county budget is approved next month.
