Crockett Marriage License Dispute Settled

The Tennessee Court of Appeals has upheld a trial court ruling that ordered a Tampa, Fla., woman to turn over an unexecuted marriage license for frontiersman Davy Crocket to Jefferson County, Tenn., where it was issued in 1805.

Margaret Vance Smith has claimed a relative saved the document from destruction long ago when the county discarded old records. But Jefferson County officials argued the original marriage license of Crockett and Margaret Elder belongs to the East Tennessee county because it is a permanent record.

Smith turned over the document last year after a trial court ruled in favor of the county. Smith appealed, but the appeals court on Tuesday upheld the ruling.

Crockett, a politician and soldier who died at The Alamo, never married Elder.
