Governor Presents Grant for Bells
The face of downtown Bells is about to change with the help of money from the state. Governor Bill Haslam paid a visit to the Crockett County city Wednesday to award a $360,000 transportation enhancement grant for the first phase of a downtown improvement project. The money will be used for construction and reconstruction of sidewalks along Main Street. Improvement work will also include ADA upgrades, concrete pavers, landscaping, lighting and other pedestrian amenities. The project looks to improve the physical environment, while enhancing the existing character and surrounding aesthetics in the downtown area. “It will make it look better and anything you, when it looks better, it draws attention, ” said Mayor Harold Craig of Bells. “Hopefully folks will come to Bells and spend some money.” Community leaders believe the project can serve as a catalyst for other investments and private sector improvements. The governor also made stops in Jackson, Henderson and Parkers Crossroads before returning to Nashville.
