JCIL Celebrates ADA Anniversary
West Tennesseans celebrated a special anniversary for anyone with disabilities in our country. JCIL or the Jackson Center for Independent Living held a special celebration Tuesday for the 21st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The federal law requires businesses to make reasonable accommodations for anyone with disabilities, which include things like ramps, parking and bathroom facilities. Those with disabilities said the celebration is an “Independence Day” of sorts for many in our country. “When you’re young, you don’t really understand the challenges as much,” said Brandon Rowland, who lost both legs as a child. “My parents had to deal with them a little more than I did then. But now I can see how much easier really, things have become.” Also, awards were presented to Sarah Harvey for her work with the disabled in West Tennessee and the Brownsville-Haywood County Rescue Squad that helped make sure the annual fishing rodeo at O’Neal Lake is always a success.
