Orphaned Hawk Ready For Release
A hawk that was orphaned in eastern Kentucky is almost ready to be released back into the wild.
Master falconer Mitch Whitaker has been caring for the bird through the 4-H raptor rehabilitation program at the Letcher County Extension Office since July 12, a few days after it was found in nearby Leslie County
Whitaker told The Mountain Eagle that he has tried not to have too much contact with the bird and paired it up with an adult red-tailed hawk that has been in the program since January.
He says the foster parenting idea has worked out and the young bird is eating well and doesn’t have any injuries. He says he plans to release it in a park in Hyden in a couple of weeks.
