Leaders of the Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority said the commercial air service at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport will soon be leaving. Authority members have been notified by the Unites States Department of Transportation that Pacific Wings, flying as Tennessee Skies will end operations on September 30. Pacific Wings, a Hawaii-based airline has been providing three round trips to Nashville, Monday through Friday and two round trips on Saturdays and Sundays. The air carrier came into Jackson after federal funds were awarded to air carriers who serve small rural airports. “In my judgment, they’re almost priced themselves out of the market,” said Lewis Cobb, attorney for McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport. “It used to be that you could fly to Nashville for $39 and Atlanta for $85, and now it’s almost $300 to get to Nashville last time I checked. You can rent a taxi for that.” McKellar-Sipes Airport is expected to announce a new carrier in the next few weeks.
