Neighborhood Networking Conference
The City of Jackson and area residents are working together to put a stop to crime. This year marks the second year Jackson city leaders hosted the Neighborhood Networking Conference, which helps teach residents how to spot crime and stay safe. The conference kicks off the 28th-annual “National Night Out”, what many consider a crime going-away party which is held every year across the country. Jackson residents from several neighborhoods gathered at the Carl Perkins Civic Center Saturday to network about ways to prevent crime. “We really want to educate them on the way the city operates and the different resources and services that we offer,” said Monique Merriweather, Director of Neighborhood Services. Police said the conference does make a positive impact. Sgt. Byron Taylor said the police department started a couple of neighborhood watch programs from last year’s conference. “What we find in prevention is if people are aware, you’re less likely to be a victim, and when you don’t have a victim, you don’t have a crime,” Sgt. Taylor said. “National Night Out” officially begins August 2. However, officials said the date could be moved to October due to the heat.
