Three votes down and one to go as the Jackson City Council approves their contribution toward the purchase of the former Lambuth University campus. The University of Memphis is one step closer to acquiring the Lambuth Univeristy campus after a unanimous vote form the Jackson city council. “I’m excited by the fact that all of the council understood the long term effect that the acquisition of Lambuth would play in the growth of Jackson,” said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. “We finally hit the illusive moving target.” The president of the U of M, Doctor Shirley Raines told the council that work is already underway to get everything ready for the University of Memphis-Lambuth Campus to begin classes in less than a month. “Should all the votes happen positively for us this week, Monday morning we will be on campus advising students and getting them enrolled for classes,” said Doctor Raines. The University of Memphis has had a satellite campus in Jackson for several decades, but Raines said moving to Lambuth would give the program room for growth to an expected 1,000 students by 2016. “We want to make sure that on the Lambuth campus there are always students and faculty and staff doing the job of building higher education in west Tennessee, said University of Memphis President, Doctor Shirley Raines. The fourth and final stakeholder to vote on the Lambuth deal will be the Madison County Commission. They are scheduled to vote during a special called meeting, Thursday afternoon at 5.
