Boy Scouts Hold Flag Retirement Ceremony
A local scout leader, along with a Jackson businessman and radio personality took time to retire well-worn American flags, Wednesday. As workers of a local security firm watched, a scout leader with some assistance folded more than two dozen American flags for their retirement ceremony. The respectful flag burning ceremony was held at the security business in midtown Jackson. Scout leaders said it is important to follow the proper etiquette when the flag is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display and should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. “We put out some public service announcements that were doing that (the ceremony),” said Frankie Lax, who assisted with the flag ceremony. “And the outpouring of people that have held their flags that are worn and torn in their shelves, brought ’em by. And so we’re going to retire over 30 flags today.” Organizers said they hope to make the ceremony an annual one.
