Haywood Schools Focus On Literacy

Speaking before the Haywood County faculty Wednesday, State Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman outlined priorities for the upcoming school year. Huffman appeared as part of a statewide tour of more than 100 school districts. “Haywood County is positioned to really make some advancements this year,” Huffman told ABC 7 Eyewitness News. “We have tough work to do, and there can be no excuses not from me, not from the district, or the schools,” he added. Huffman and Haywood County Superintendent Marlon King both agreed that literacy must be a focus for the system. Recent standardized test scores show a need advance reading comprehension for the students. “Literacy is at the heart of learning,” King said. Statewide, Tennessee is also placing a focus on reading, leaders said. Haywood County students return to school on August 8.
