University of Memphis Officially Occupies Lambuth
After months of meetings with both local and state officials, the University of Memphis is taking over the former Lambuth University campus. On Friday, the state granted the University of Memphis permission to enter into a lease agreement to occupy the former Lambuth University campus. The move paves the way for the U of M to open a satellite campus in Jackson. University of Memphis president Dr. Shirley Raines said she has big plans for the new school, starting with the popular nursing, education and business programs. “As we determine from the community where there is enough of a market for other majors to be here, we will be adding those,” Raines said. Raines said they don’t know how many students will enroll for the fall yet, but they need at least 225 to start out. Their goal is to have 1,000 students by 2014. Jackson city councilman Johnny Dodd said since Lambuth is in his district, he will work on it. “I would like to work and be partnering with the university to recruit kids to come in to this school,” Dodd said. Officials said the move will save students money – especially for Lambuth transfers. They hope this campus will have more students attending college. Information sessions for students will be held August 9 from 5-8 p.m. and August 10 from 2-6 p.m. Fall classes are scheduled to begin August 27.
