Haywood County Considers Traffic Cameras

Haywood County Sheriff Melvin Bond says he is considering a plan proposed by an Arizona company to bring speed and traffic-signal monitoring cameras to county roads. The devices would automatically detect violations and mail a copy of the infraction to the offenders. Similar programs are already in use by various other West Tennessee cities including Jackson and Medina. “We would be the first county in the state to consider their use” Bond told ABC 7 Eyewitness News, Monday. “I see this as a win-win. With reduced manpower this is the best way to help slow speeders down in these areas.” For now, the program is in an evaluation phase, officials say. Company documents show a three to four camera system could bring in an estimated $100,000 in revenue. Leaders with the City of Brownsville says they are not interested in pursuing the camera program at this time.
