Mother Arrested and Charged with Abandoning Infant

A Jackson mother accused of abandoning her 4-month-old child is an un-air conditioned stairwell over the weekend has been arrested and charged. Jackson police say Barbara Labossiere, 23, now faces a count of aggravated child abuse and neglect. On Saturday around 8:30 p.m., Jackson police were called to the 800 block of North Highland Ave. Officers were told by Labossiere’s mother that she had kicked her out after confronting her about missing money. The mother said about 30 minutes after her daughter and grandchild left, she heard the baby crying. She opened her door and saw the baby lying in a car seat on the stairwell. Labossiere was nowhere to be found. The stairwell is not air conditioned and the responding officer noted the temperature in the high 80’s, at the time. The child was uninjured and left in the care of its grandmother. Labossiere was arrested by Jackson police around 10 a.m., Sunday. She was formally charged in Jackson City Court, Tuesday morning. She remains in custody at the Madison County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond. Her next court appearance is set for September 1. The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services is assisting in the investigation.
