Anti-Traffic Camera Petition Presented in McKenzie
Are speed cameras really bad for Business? Many in McKenzie say they are and Thursday night a petition bearing their names were handed over to city leaders. Area real estate business owner Roger Reed presented the McKenzie City Council with a petition with 130 names representing 106 businesses. City leaders said they would discuss the issue further, but argued the cameras are not affecting business. City records show compared to the same time last year, sales tax revenues are actually up by $50,000 and crashes are down. “Since the cameras have been installed, we have a 65 percent reduction in the accidents that have occurred on Highland Drive,” said Mayor Jill Holland. According to the mayor, McKenzie has asked the state to consider raising the speed limit on Highland from 35 to 40 miles per hour. They are expected to know the state’s decision in about three weeks.
